Troubleshooting Windows 10 Update Failures – Fixing StopUpdates10 and Restoring Windows Update

Help

Over its decades of evolution, the Windows operating system has seen its fair share of bugs and glitches. One common area of frustration for users is when the automatic Windows Update process fails or encounters problems. In this guide, we’ll explore some of the top troubleshooting techniques for getting Windows Update back on track.

Run the Built-In Troubleshooter

Microsoft provides a Windows Update Troubleshooter utility that can automatically detect and resolve many common update errors. This should be one of the first steps taken when Windows Update is not working.

To access it, go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. Run the troubleshooter and restart your PC when prompted. This can quickly fix issues like corrupt files or registry entries without the need for manual tweaking.

The Windows Update service relies on several background processes like BITS and the Cryptographic Services. Occasionally, cycling these services off and on can clear any stuck instances of those processes.

Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog and type "services.msc". Look for the Windows Update service as well as the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Cryptographic Services. Right-click each one and select Restart. With the services restarted, try checking for updates again.

Reset Windows Update Components

If service restarts did not resolve things, the next step is resetting the Windows Update components themselves. This will re-register all the associated .DLL files and clear any corrupt data that could be causing problems.

Open an elevated Command Prompt and run the following commands (press Enter after each one):

net stop wuauserv net stop cryptSvc net stop bits ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old net start wuauserv net start cryptSvc net start bits

Once completed, restart your PC and test Windows Update again. This should resolve most stubborn errors.

Temporarily Disable Antivirus

Conflicts with third-party antivirus software are a prime culprit behind Windows Update failures. Temporarily disabling your antivirus can determine if it’s the cause of the issue.

Navigate to the system tray icon for your antivirus and find the option to disable it. Then try running Windows Update. If that succeeds, check with your antivirus vendor for guidance to adjust settings or whitelist the update modules.

Block Updates with StopUpdates10

For those wanting to halt Windows Updates completely, a utility called StopUpdates10 can do the trick. This creates registry policies to disable the update service. However, Microsoft does override these in newer versions of Windows 10.

Download StopUpdates10 from the developer’s site and run it. Click the "Stop Windows Updates" button to toggle the blocking on. Undo this when you want to re-enable updates. Use this method cautiously though, as blocking updates also stops important security patches.

Reset Using the Update Reset Script

As a last resort, you can completely reset the Windows Update components using a batch script. This achieves the same result as the manual steps listed earlier.

Download the Reset Windows Update Script from Microsoft’s site. Extract and run the ResetWUENG.bat batch file as Administrator. Once completed, your Windows Update configuration and data will be reset. Check for updates again after restarting your PC.

When All Else Fails

Despite best efforts, some Windows Update errors require advanced troubleshooting beyond these basic steps. Issues like SSU (Servicing Stack Update) failures or compatibility blocking may need specific solutions. Consult online communities and Microsoft Support for guidance. Typically, a clean install of the latest Windows version resolves even persistent update issues.

We hope these troubleshooting tips help you get Windows Update functioning again. Let us know in the comments if you encountered another tricky update problem and how you fixed it!
